Monitor and optimize licenses

You can use Cloud license management to track your organization's license usage and identify opportunities to optimize your spending with Bring Your Own License (BYOL) offerings.

Cloud license management provides separate pages for the following currently supported resource types that have BYOL-applicable licensing.

  • Windows Server
  • SQL Server

Both the Windows Server and SQL Server pages display Savings and Licenses indicators that provide an overview of your organization’s status on BYOL licensing.

These pages also provide a resource table that displays detailed information on each of your licensed resources. For more information on the displayed indicators and resource tables, see Windows Server: Reference and SQL Server: Reference.

Filter data

You can filter the data displayed in the resource tables of the Windows Server and SQL Server pages in several ways:

  • Column selector: Use the Columns selector in the table menu to show or hide columns.

  • Column filter: Use the search function at the top of columns to search and filter data.

  • Column headers: To sort data based on a specific column, select the relevant column header.

The table filtering affects all data shown in the tables and all exports of data from the tables.

View license requirements and BYOL status

If you select the name of a single resource from the resources tables, an information panel will display and provide you with licensing information and resource details.

Licensing information: This tab displays the license requirements for the resource and its current Azure Hybrid Benefit license status. These can be Eligible, BYOL, or Not Applicable.

For more information on why a resource has its current license status, see Determine license status and requirements.

Details: This tab displays a detailed summary of the resource.

Summarize BYOL savings for multiple resources

On the Windows Server and SQL Server pages, you can select multiple resources that are eligible for BYOL licensing, then generate a summary of the potential savings if you convert those resources from pay-as-you-go to BYOL pricing.

This summary can help you to make the business case to convert resources from pay-as-you-go to BYOL pricing. The information can be copied and used in correspondence and reports.

  1. In Cloud on Snow Atlas, go to the Cloud license management page.

  2. Select the Windows Server or SQL Server page.

  3. In the Resource table, select two or more resources that have a License status of Eligible.

  4. Select Actions > Summarize.

A Summary of selected subscriptions panel will display information about potential savings, required licenses, and other informantion about the subscriptions.

    note

When a uniform scale set belonging to a cluster is included in the summary, the total license requirements and potential savings may be higher than what is reported. The Azure Hybrid Benefit is set for an entire cluster and not for its individual uniform scale sets. Therefore, if uniform scale sets are part of a cluster, you should add all of the cluster's uniform scale sets to the summary.

Export resource information

You can export the licensed resource information that is displayed in the resource table of the Windows Server and SQL Server pages as a file in an XLSX or CSV format.

The file will be exported to your local download directory, and the information that it provides will match the columns that you have selected to display from the Column menu.

  1. In Cloud on Snow Atlas, go to the Cloud license management page.

  2. Select the Windows Server or SQL Server page.

  3. In the Resource table, select the resources that you want to include in your export file.

By default, if no resources are selected, information for all resources displayed in the resource table will be exported.

  4. Select Export.

  5. In Export selected data, optionally enter a new file name, and select an XLSX or CSV file format.

  6. Select Export.

  7. When the file is ready to be downloaded, select Download.
